Colour on historical facades from the Middle Ages to modern times:
History, Research and Conservation Issues
22-24. 09. 2010
Zamek Królewski w Warszawie
( Warschau )
Since 2006 the Warsaw Heritage Protection Department has been leading
the project “Colour on facades along The Royal Route in Warsaw”. The aim of
the assignment is to reconstruct the original colour scheme on the facades,
where conservation research has proved the existence of original renders and
their pigments along with the subsequent paint layers.
Within this project we are generally supervising the studies of paint coats on
historical facades, where the conservation works are being carried out. As a result
of recently accomplished works a few historical landmarks in Warsaw, have been
restored to their original colour scheme. The renewed facades have stirred up
a lot of interest and discussion both in the media and in professional circles.
The 30th anniversary of the nomination of the Old Town in Warsaw onto
the UNESCO World Heritage List falls in September 2010. Warsaw’s nomination
was inscribed as a unique example of the complete and successful reconstruction
of an entire urban complex. In 1980, Warsaw was the 30th city nominated onto
the UNESCO List and in 2010 we will celebrate its 30th anniversary.
To celebrate this signifi cant anniversary we organize the international
conference on Colour on historical facades from the Middle Ages to modern
times: History, Research and Conservation issues on the 22nd - 24th September
2010 in Warsaw.
We propose to divide the conference into two parts: History and the Methods
of Conservation. The fi rst part will be focused on the history of colour in
architecture while the second one will refer to the subject of conservation
research and its impact upon conservation policy.
The Honorary patronage of the conference undertaken by:
Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz — Mayor of Warsaw
Tomasz Merta — Under-secretary of Ministry of Cultural and National Heritage
General Inspector of Monuments
Polish National Commission for UNESCO
